Accutane linked to bowel diseases
After losing a $33-million lawsuit in June of 2009, the manufacturer of Accutane, Roche Pharmaceuticals, pulled Accutane off the
U.S. markets. Approximately 13 million people have taken Accutane since it was introduced in 1982, and there are numerous lawsuits against Roche that are still pending because of claims of bowel disease.
In November of 2008, three Accutane users were awarded $12.9 million by an Atlantic City, New Jersey jury because of claims that the drug caused long-term inflammatory bowel disease. Close to $21 million was awarded in three separate lawsuits in New Jersey and Florida because of cases involving Accutane. Over five thousand lawsuits have been filed against Roche Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Accutane, alleging that the medication caused serious side effects of:
1. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
2. Ulcerative Colitis
3. Crohn's Disease
