 GADOLINIUM

Angiogram, MRI, CT Scan Contrast Dye

The FDA reports hundreds of patients receiving contrast dye with Gadolinium experienced moderate to end-stage kidney disease that progressed into the life threatening disease, Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or Nephrogenic Systemic Dermatopathy. NSF/NFD side effects include:

  • swelling of the hands and feet
  • dark or red patches, bumps, or blisters
  • hardening of the skin
  • yellow patches on the eyes
  • burning, itching, or severe, sharp, constant pain
  • loss of skin flexibility, muscle restlessness, and  weakness
  • deep bone pain in the hips and ribs is sometimes reported

We are prosecuting these cases for our clients that have developed symptoms after receiving contrast dye. NSF, often misdiagnosed as scleroderma, develops months to years after having dye or contrast injected during Angiograms, MRAs,  MRIs, and CT scans. The Gadolinium-based contrast agent injected into the patient's vein can have devastating effects on the kidneys, skin and joints. NSF/NFD most commonly affects persons who have mild, moderate, or severe kidney disease. Nephrogenic Sclerosing Fibrosis and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy occur when there is a buildup of collagen in tissues that results in thickening and hardening of the skin. NSF/NFD can result in either partially or completely immobilizing patients, but in the most severe cases can cause death. There is no known cure for NSF.

GADOLINIUM INJURIES AND WARNINGS

The FDA required the five drug manufacturers of Gadolinium to apply a Boxed Warning about the serious side effects and alarming results of using Gadolinium contrast dye. The dye is still used in health care facilities to this day and patients are seldom aware that the drug has these deadly side effects.

The five Gadolinium containing contrast dyes are:

Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine)

Omniscan (gadodiamide)

OptiMARK (gadoversetamide)

MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine)

Prohance (gadoteridol)

The dyes are manufactured by multi billion dollar corporations. Pharmaceutical companies owe a moral and legal responsibility to the public to ensure that the contrast dyes they manufacture and market are not unreasonably dangerous and to ensure that the consumer is made aware of the risks associated with the medication. The business of drugs in the United States is highly competitive and worth billions of dollars. Unfortunately, some pharmaceutical companies are hastily introducing and marketing new drugs prematurely and without adequate warnings, resulting in tragic losses that could have been avoided.
