How Many Women Have Ovarian Cancer?
Over 20,000 women are diagnosed each year with ovarian cancer and approximately 14,000 die. Cancer strikes about one in 70 women, though studies show that women who use talc-containing products on their genitals have a one in 50 chance of developing the disease. An expert at trial testified at least 45,000 women have died as a result of ovarian cancer that may be attributed to talcum powder use on the genitals and an estimated 1,500 women will die within the next year as a result of talc use.
Numerous talcum powder manufacturers changed to using cornstarch rather than talc after the American Cancer Society advocated for women to switch to cornstarch around the genital area in 1999. The plaintiffs advocate that talc particles can reach the ovaries and cause inflammation, while the defendant manufacturers allege there hasn’t been a large cohort study to prove a definitive cause and effect. The juries obviously believe that Johnson and Johnson’s Baby Powder, Shower to Shower and Baby Magic caused the plaintiffs’ cancer.
What type of cancer does talc cause?
Ovarian cancer and mesothelioma have been linked to talcum powder when applied near the genitals or inhaled into the lungs when dusting. Talc particles migrate up the vagina, uterus and Fallopian tube into the ovary. Genital usage includes dusting the female parts or applying on sanitary napkins, diaphragms, or condoms.
Mesothelioma has been linked to inhaling talcum powder when applying on the body. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that impacts the lining of the lungs and causes deadly cancer.

Many medical studies state that the link between talc and ovarian cancer can be attributed to talc particles traveling through the female reproductive system and causing prolonged inflammation of the ovaries, which can promote the growth of ovarian cancer cells. In addition, research showing the presence of asbestos and other carcinogens in talc indicates that these deadly particles can be inhaled in the course of everyday use and travel throughout the body.
