Birth control Depo-Provera linked to brain tumors after long term use has been reported in a recent study.

Depo-Provera injections may significantly increase the risk of intracranial meningiomas – benign brain and spine tumors – as published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera alleging that:

  • Pfizer failed to adequately warn users about the potential risks associated with long-term use of the drug.
  • Pfizer may have rushed the drug to market without sufficient long-term studies.

The birth control linked to brain tumors after long term use study indicated the following:

  • Women who used Depo-Provera for more than a year had a 5.6-fold higher risk of developing brain tumors.
  • The study analyzed data from over 18,000 women who underwent surgery for intracranial meningioma between 2009 and 2018.

What Are Brain Tumor Meningiomas?

Intracranial meningiomas are typically non-cancerous tumors that develop in the layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. They account for nearly 40% of central nervous system cancers. Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Vision problems
  • Seizures
  • Other neurological issues

The mechanism of injury is not completely known, however,  research revealed that progesterone receptors are present in over 60% of meningiomas, which could potentially explain the link between progestogen-containing medications and tumor growth. The study’s findings have broader implications beyond Depo-Provera:

  • Two menopausal hormone therapy drugs, medrogestone and promegestone, were also associated with increased meningioma risk.
  • The researchers estimate that the number of attributable meningiomas could be potentially high, given that 74 million women worldwide use medroxyprogesterone acetate for birth control.
